December Figure Drawing

As the old year is counting down to a close our figure drawing group is on vacation until mid January.  I'll miss the weekly sessions but look forward to 2013 being a very good year.  Out with the old and in with the new!  May the future year bring peace and be kind to all of us!

A Show An Exhibit and Dance too!

The Nutcracker performances in Winona were fabulous and I'm full of inspiration and sketches for finishing the dance project.  It's hard to believe it's coming up on a year of documenting the ballet this spring.
This fall also brought a shared booth with my good friend Cathy Missaghi at the Winona Art Walk, teaching High School classes at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and a workshop with dance props at the Minnesota Conservatory For the Arts.

Winona Art Walk at the Friendship Center
Our booth thanks to help from other wonderful artists in Winona for the set up!
My cards and "Mini" canvas with Cathy's encaustics.
Students work and mine exhibited with the Nutcracker costume and props from the    workshop at Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts.

The beginning of the next dance painting.
 Almost done....
Done for now!

A Road Trip, Dance and Pastels

I am working on the "Art of Dance" project including the largest pastel painting I've attempted so far.

I thought it might be interesting to document the process of the latest dance pastel painting.  I started on 24"X36" Wallis paper and used an acrylic wash over my initial drawing.  Now in the process of applying pastels over the under painting.  I have never used this process before so here's hoping it turns out to be a keeper!  I'll post updates later.....

Completely unrelated to dance was a road trip last weekend with my daughter Mara to the Figge Museum in Davenport, IA to see Rose Frantzen's exhibition "Portrait of Maquoketa" and her 4 hour live demonstration of portrait painting.  It was a truly lovely weekend getting to spend time with Mara, driving a beautiful route along the river including stops to see the tundra swans and getting fresh cider and apples before the orchards close for the season.   Include inspiring time with Rose Frantzen and her artist husband Charles Morris, discovery of the Figge Museum and delicious meals. We truly had all of the components of a great road trip!

Figure Drawing

Tuesday evenings are devoted to our figure drawing group plus a Wednesday here and there.  I love drawing people, bodies and faces and playing with the colors in light and shadow.  Poses go from 3 minutes to 35 and everything in between.   Here are a few from the end of September and beginning of October.

Greeting Cards! They're here!

It is so exciting when something you've dreamed of doing becomes a reality.  This week brought my first printed greeting cards.  It's something I've thought about doing for the last year and now they're here.  Next week the reproductions of some of my pastel, watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings on white linen paper and envelopes will be stuffed into cello sleeves (an unfortunate necessity) and into local shops.

A HUGE THANKS to all who helped me.   I could never have gotten it done so well and beautifully without you!!

Beginning of September

September is here along with cooler temperatures and a chance to get outside to paint more often.  Not a lot to show for my outdoor efforts unfortunately but that is the way it works....

I do have some life drawings to share.  Hopefully landscapes and dancescapes to soon follow!

Art in Motion

The fall class catalog is out for Semester 1 of the Minnesota Conservatory For The Arts and I am excited to be offering two workshops for the new visual arts department.  The workshops are called Art in Motion, Drawing a Powerful Still Life.  You can download the new catalog or find out more about visual art classes at this link.  http://forms.smumn.edu/sitepages/pid4271.php

The drawings from the workshop will be exhibited during the Nutcracker performance n the Ben Miller Lobby at the Page Theatre in December 2012.  We're going to have fun!

July into August

July has flown by filled with unseasonable heat and some special visitors.

Sunday brought the AS IS (Artist Salon In Session) to my house in Winona.  What a wonderful day with deepening on topics that effect our lives and art, doing an art project together and lots of great food and visiting.  I was the "inspiring artist show and tell" but got more from the wonderful support of all of the others than I could ever inspire them.  Photographers, writers, painters, actually all kinds of artists from Il, WI and MN.  The only websites I have here to post of some of the artists are Cathy Missaghi http://www.bucolicdreaming.com/ and Nancy Wong http://www.nancymwong.com/.  It was a more than lovely day together.  Thank you all!

I have fallen behind in my projects with this insane (in many ways) last month. but I've started a series of pastel veges and fruits.  Yes! it's that time of year where the tomatoes are beautiful next to the tall glossy basel and the cucumbers are plentiful. Still getting enough snow peas to make it worth going out early to munch on them while scanning the garden for pests and newly arrived vegetables to harvest, seemingly overnight.
